God does not desire going through the motions. Micah provides in this specific reading 2 identifiable characteristics: a new ruler and a new relationship.
This new ruler will come from the boonies, a place of no notoriety. The ruler will come from small places....literally out of no where. Bethlehem is the place that this new ruler will come. As the season of Advent approaches we begin to anticipate this new ruler in Jesus....born in Bethlehem.
But what about this new relationship. Micah says we already know what God desires....to DO justice, LOVE kindness, and WALK humbly with God. No longer is the exchange of goods and services, going thru the motions, offering up the bare minimum of being in relationship part of the deal.
This new relationship will not be based on score keeping or sacrifice. Instead, Micah calls God's people to offer a 1000 acts of justice and kindness instead of sacrificing 1000 rams.
This new ruler Jesus will provide us a new relationship that calls us into kingdom goals of doing justice, loving kindness and walking humbly with our God. We walk humbly with God because God's walk is humble. That's what happens when the ruler comes out of a no where location like Bethlehem.
