Part of retelling this story is just to observe what happens in it. It is to see God at work, doing what God had promised.

What strikes me in this story is the phrase: "And that is what happened." It is a simple sentence to sum up everything God had promised the Israelites.

  • Lead them out of Slavery
  • Provide a Land for them
  • Defeat their enemies
  • protect them along the journey
  • provide for their lives
  • cross the Jordan river without getting wet
And that is what happened. Retelling the story reminds us that God is still at work in the world and in us, living into the the things that God promises. These are promises kept.

"And that is what happened."
