The laws of restitution are something of a case law. Codes of law were par for the course in ancient times. It helped keep order. In those codes are royal proclamations expressing the king's responsibility for justice in the land. More than that though is God's commitment to the improvement of social conditions.
The Laws of restitution are divine governance of the community of Israel. They include laws of slavery, laws of capital crimes, laws of personal injury, laws pertaining to the damage of property, and laws involving contracts and payment.
So what? As we have already witnessed, you can get lost in the minutia of details and wonder what the heck is going on. The main point here is that of justice and community. The laws of restitution declare for the people of God a care and desire that honoring others means a great deal for the God who has claimed them as God's own.....even to the degree that there are consequences when the care for others is broken and restitution for what God has provided. All for the benefit of the community to love together in unity rather than brokenness. In this way God reclaims the original promise of wholeness that we were created in
