Observation: Joseph is especially loved by his father and his brothers hate him for it. When Joseph shares his dreams, they become Jealous of him and plot to get rid of him. Even is father and mother are taken aback by his dreams to 'Lord over them.'
Application: I wonder if these are the stories people think of when other people use the phrase "biblical family values." Of course, the people of God run the gamut on emotions and sinful behavior, but how his brothers deal with Joseph is acting out of jealousy. Jealousy is simply being bothered by the success or dreams of a rival sibling, coworker, or company.
These feelings of jealousy tie us up into the success of others and an inability to recognize the blessings that we do have. It is operating out of scarcity instead of abundance (Which is what Joseph's dream is really about). Joseph will live into the dream by becoming what God had in mind, even through a terrible ordeal, to take a position of power after being sold into slavery by his own family.
What are the things that make you jealous? Power? Money? Success? Possessions?
Prayer: Lord, free us from the power of jealousy and help us see the abundance you provide.
